In 1959, Mel and Marge Pierson acquired the 15 acres of property in Malibu's Escondido
Canyon now know as the Malibu Phoenix Retreat. They extended the use of their private
recreational facilities from the city to Los Angeles. Surf Malibu was created as a 500-person
day camp, a 200-child nursery school, a sleep-away camp and a private swim club with
countless activities. With the simple hope and belief that their family run recreational
facility could provide quality and a variety of activities unlike any other county or city facility,
they did just that. Now, after 50 years of family-run recreation and retreats, Malibu Phoenix
Retreat extends its facilities to the public with new programs designed to meet the needs of all
neighboring groups and individuals.

Now run exclusively by Fred Pierson (the eldest son of founders Mel and Marge Pierson),
Malibu Phoenix is a one-of-a kind location hidden in the hills of Malibu. Today, this unique property is available for any and all occasions. It is our hope and desire to carry on the tradition of the Malibu Phoenix Retreat, and as the years go on, it is hoped that Fred, along with his two daughters Megan & Jenna, find the maximum potential of the property by making it available to the public to take advantage of all this wonderful place has to offer.
